Lung Cancer Research

By
Medical professionals, doctors and others involved in the scientific study of lung cancer are constantly researching to find both preventative measures and possible cures for this cancer.
Stanford University in Stanford, California is researching the benefits of Sterotactic body radiotherapy upon lung cancer. This method of treatment is being used more and more as medical statistics seem to show promising survival rates.
The University of Maryland located in Baltimore, Maryland is conducting research in the field of genetics as it relates to lung cancer. The medical professionals believe that their studies show this cancer can be detected in its early stages through certain genetic biomarkers which can be seen in the sputum.
The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan is conducting research on the results of cancer therapy when patients are treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. The medical professionals involved in this research feel that their studies indicate that the treatments are showing definite positive results in dogs with spontaneous cancers and believe that all indications show that it would probably have the same results with human patients.
Another research project at the University of Marylalnd in Baltimore, Maryland has to do with detecting lung cancer in its early, hopefully curable stages. This research project is using the combined skills and knowledge of medical professionals who are considered to have extensive expertise in a number of different fields, such as molecular genetics, nanotechnology, cytopathology, oncology and biostatistics. Feng Jiang, who is the medical professional heading up the research is in hopes that the combined efforts of these medical professionals will result in a major break through in the fight against this cancer.
The Abramson Cancer Center which is a part of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has been awarded a number of support grants to be used in conducting research on lung cancer. These grants have made it possible for them to organize strong research programs involving medical professionals who are considered to be outstanding experts in the field of this cancer expertise.
All of these research programs have the official backing of the National Cancer Institute and in addition to the person assigned as the principal investigator of each program, each also has a National Cancer Institute program director assigned to it.
Lung cancer has been shown by medical studies to be the number one cancerous killer in the world today. Over two hundred thousand people become victims of it every year and out of that over two hundred thousand over half die each year.
Research projects on lung cancer are done on a world wide basis, some on small scales and some on large ones. Everyone does what they can. We need to do what we can to educate people about lung cancer to help fight this dreaded enemy.

Cancer Research UK

By
More and more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Malignant neoplasm is no longer the death sentence it once was. Cancer treatments in the past were sometimes drastic and devastating. Surgery that used to involve a large incision can now be accomplished through a small incision using a surgical probe that allows surgeons to see and remove cancerous tissue without the trauma of major surgery.
Radiation therapy has advanced as well. More sophisticated equipment and technology does less damage to the surrounding tissues. New discoveries and developments have brought about new and more effective medicines with less side effects. This and other advancements have been brought about by ongoing cancer research.
Cancer Research UK is one research organization based in the United Kingdom. It is one of the few independent organizations devoted to malignant neoplasm research in the world. One of the goals of this organization and others like it is to gain a better understanding of the various types of cancer. By doing so they can then develop better medicines and treatments to fight malignant neoplasm.
Only through a better understanding of cancer can advancements in these areas be made.Research is the step by step process that is done by collecting and examining data on malignant neoplasm. It almost always involves a quest for new information that can help to develop a new drug or treatment or hopefully some day an actual cure for cancer.
Research can involve the study of its basic biology to the effects of treatments. Another area of research involves the testing of drugs that have already been developed. Before a drug is made available to the public it must undergo years of testing to make sure it is safe and effective. Right now there are drugs undergoing testing that in years to come will be available for use but researchers must first determine their overall effect on the cancer patients who use them.
Most people don't realize just how many different types of cancer there are, each with its different problems in treating it. So there has to be many different areas of research to develop treatments for them. Cancer Research UK supports over three-thousand researchers and the work they are doing.
The one true key to successful malignant neoplasm research is money. One ongoing job for nonprofit cancer research organizations is raising the funds to support the work they are doing. Anyone can help this research by making a donation to any of the nonprofit cancer research centers. In this way you can do your part to help find better treatments and hopefully some day a cure for the disease.Another way to help is to take part in a clinical trial of a new drug or treatment.
Another area of malignant neoplasm research is focused on the relieving of the symptoms of the cancer. Until a cure is found people with malignant neoplasm have to endure the symptoms of the disease. The first one that come so mind is pain but there are many others such as dietary and nutritional special problems cancer patients face.
Learning how to better keep cancer patients pain free, happy and healthy is another area of ongoing malignant neoplasm research. There too many areas of cancer research to cover here but we have covered a few. Only through this research can progress be made in understanding its causes, how to prevent it and eventually a cure.

History of Lung Cancer

By
Lungs are part of the body, responsible for breathing. Lung cancer is caused by abnormal cells that grow into a malignant tumor. The factors that cause lung cancer are many.
Personal and family history of a person are two aspects that may cause lung cancer. Smoking is one of the primary reasons for growth of cancerous cells. History of chain smoking may increase chances of contracting this dreaded disease. It is also possible to be at risk even if not a smoker. Passive smokers are also susceptible to this disease.
Persons above the age of 40 are more liable to be afflicted with cancer. Though it is not a rule and there are enough younger people also who have been afflicted by this disease. People who are exposed to air pollution have to be especially careful and observe for tell tale signs of lung cancer.
Family history of lung cancer increases risks to the disease. It is therefore important to keep updated about the symptoms and causes of the disease. Sometimes the symptoms can be as simple as a cough or fatigue. At times it can be more complicated as a swelling in the throat or difficulty in breathing or swallowing. It is essential to keep tab on personal medical history to help in early detection of the disease.
Lung cancer is a disease that is difficult to detect. Usually it is in the later stages that doctors can actually detect the seriousness of the disease. Treatment for lung cancer is a tedious process. Advanced stages of lung cancer may require a combination of treatments to cure it. Chances of total cure are reduced, if the disease spreads to other parts of the body.
Due to its hereditary factor, children or relatives of lung cancer affected patients should take extra care to get checked regularly and rule out possibility of getting the disease. Regular exercise and a diet with low fat with high fiber content can reduce chances of getting the disease. It would be beneficial to quit smoking and stick to moderate consumption of alcohol.

First Signs of Lung Cancer

By
Lung cancer is a major killer of men and women across the country. Air pollutants, secondhand smoke, cigarette smoking especially, and other causative factors contribute to the disease.
Most of us think that the lung cancer is mostly common among the cigarette smokers and it is true that the vast majority of cases are or were smokers. But there are non-smokers do get lung cancer and smokers who don't get it.
Signs of lung cancer are often not apparent in the early stages. However it is better to identify lung cancer as possible.
The most common early symptom of lung cancer is haemoptysis (coughing up blood). Consider this early symptom a warning sign of a cancer, which may be curable.
If you find that you are coughing up blood, you should immediately contact your doctor , especially if you are 40 years of age, or older, with a long-term smoking habit.
Some of the primary signs include:
* Hacking, persistent cough
* Coughing up blood
* Shortness of breath
* Wheezing
* Chest pain
* Lost appetite
* Lost weight
* Recurring bronchitis or pneumonia
The above symptoms also being the symptoms of many other lung problems, so it is always advisable to see a physician to ascertain the cause
Secondary signs of simple cell lung cancer include:
* Weakness
* Difficulty swallowing
* Changes in nails
* Hoarse or raspy voice
* High fever
* Swelling of facial features
It's true that most symptoms of lung cancer do not show themselves until the disease is in its advanced stages.
However, sometimes people exhibit signs early in the disease's development. It is imperative that the first notice of symptoms or concern sends you straight to the doctor.
The sooner treatment is begun, the better. A cure is possible if caught early enough and, if not, then a better quality of life and more of it.
When lung cancer spreads to other parts of the body, organs and bones, referred to as 'metastasizing', signs and symptoms include:
* Aching and sharp bone pain
* Changes in the brain that exhibit themselves through weakness, numbness, dizziness, and seizure
* Jaundice (whites of eyes, nails, and skin yellow
* Masses near the skin's surface
* Headaches
* Numbness and loss of sensation in your extremities
All of these signs and symptoms of lung cancer may be caused by other health problems. The only way to know for sure is to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Why is Passive Smoking One of the Main Leading Causes of Cancer in the World?

By
Passive smokers inhale the fumes given out by frequent smokers while they are smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Passive smoking, also known as secondhand smoking is most frequent in public places, and can also be observed in some private residences. Bars and restaurants are the most common places where one can experience passive smoking. Many individuals are also exposed to immense passive smoke in their own apartments or at the homes of friends and family. Smoke lingers in the air for longer, particularly in enclosed rooms when a person keeps smoking for long. Children, particularly toddlers and infants, are at a higher risk from these poisonous remains even when smoker dissipates, because it forms a layer on their skin and clothes.
Passive smokers usually have to confront with many detrimental diseases such as heart related diseases, cancer, ear infections and respiratory problems. Passive smoking has been also found to be responsible for lower birth weights and a major cause of several infant deaths. As per recent studies, around one million smokers are found suffering from asthma, which is primarily caused by passive smoking.
Passive smokers are susceptible to a number of frightening effects. As one would expect, bronchial tubes of a child are relatively smaller and immune system is less developed making them more vulnerable to a host of illnesses and disorders. As their airways are smaller, kids take shorter and faster breaths than adults and as a result they actually breathe in more harmful particles while breathing. Exposures to smoke of tobacco can even double the risk of children contracting disorders and diseases like pneumonia and bronchitis calling for the need of hospitalization for these illnesses.
It has been proven that second hand smoke which is generated by the exhalation of the smoker and by the smoke rising from the smoldering end of the cigarette has adverse effects on the human physiology. Some of the long term effects of passive smoking are listed below:
-Second hand smoke has been proven as a carcinogenic substance.
-Research has shown a significant increase in the relative risk of lung cancer in people who are exposed to second hand smoke.
-Passive smoking increases the risk of contraction of breast cancer among younger, premenopausal women by seventy percent.
-Children are at a higher risk of developing brain tumor in their lifetime due to a sustained exposure to passive smoking. Even if the mother does not smoke, her exposure to second hand smoke during pregnancies increases the chances of her babies developing brain tumor at some point in their lifetime.
The adverse effects of second hand smoke have been researched and complied for many years. The effects are life threatening, serious and debilitating. It is a proven fact that it is next to impossible to avert passive smoking completely, but it is definitely in your best interest to avoid it as much as possible. Pregnant women and children are at a higher risk and they should take every step possible to ensure that they are protected from the effects of second hand smoke.
This technique works for me, and I'm sure it'll work for you too. Control your own life, if you would like to Quit Smoking with the easiest most successful system. Quit Smoking Help or Are You Smoking?

The 5 Biggest Causes of Cancer - Know the Facts

By

Cancer is a deadly disease that is even capable of bringing death to the patient. Researchers are trying their best to find cure for this malignant disease. Cancer is of different types. The classification of cancer into different types is based on the part of the human body in which the disease has affected.
Most of the people do not know much about the disease and this ignorance is the major reason why the death rate are so high. Even though, researchers have not fully succeeded in finding the perfect cure for cancer, the death rate can be controlled if people have good knowledge about the disease.
You should not only pay attention in understanding the different types of cancer and their treatments, but also the causes. Understanding the causes will help you in avoiding the things that may result in cancer. The main causes of cancer are mentioned below.
Smoking
Many studies about cancer have already found that smoking is one among the main causes of cancer. Smoking affects the overall human body. The habit takes a toll on the health of many organs including kidneys, pancreas and stomach. It is also found that quitting smoking will reduce the risk of getting cancer, considerably.
Genetics
Genetics is another main cause of cancer. If there is a history of cancer in the family, the person has higher chances of getting cancer. This is the reason why it is said that such persons should take extra precautions. The modern day medical sciences have developed greatly and there are numerous genetic tests available for the hereditary cancers. However, this does not mean that the person who has a family history of getting cancer will develop it.

Environmental factors
It has also been found that the environment in which a person lives will also have a major role in cancer development.
Prolonged exposure to minerals like asbestos can cause numerous health problems including cancer. The medical problems that may occur because of the exposure to such minerals are known as mesothelioma. Exposure to benzene will also increase the risk of getting cancer according to some studies. You will only be able to understand the critical nature of this information when you come to know that benzene is present in scenarios including smoking, pollution and combustion of gasoline.
Unsafe Sex
Unsafe sex will also increase your risk of getting cancer. The chances of developing virus known as HPV will increase if you are practicing unsafe sex. This will in turn increase your risk of getting vulvar, vaginal, anal and cervical cancers.
Exposure to rays from sun
The UV rays emitted by the sun can also be called as a cause of cancer. These rays will result in the development of skin cancer. You will be astonished to know that wearing sunscreens when you are outside during the part of the day in which the sunrays are the strongest can reduce your risk of getting skin cancer.
The aforementioned are the five major causes of cancer.
